Casey Anthony was charged with murder in the death of her daughter Caley, a toddler who was initially reported missing by her mother. Three years later, after a six-week trial, Casey Anthony was found not-guilty. Tom Burton, as the Director of Photography and Video at the Orlando Sentinel, led a team of photographers who covered the investigation and trial. Burton developed a then-innovative system for the courtroom photographer’s camera to be directly hooked to an ethernet connection, allowing for live publishing on social media. Burton also created and managed a photo distribution system to server more than 500 credentialed media representatives covering the sensational trial.

In April of 2006, the University of Florida won its first NCAA basketball championship. In the next two-and-a-half years, Florida would win another basketball championship and two football championships during an historic run. Tom Burton assigned photographers and edited on site for championship games in Indianapolis, Glendale, Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale. Scores of edits from each game met multiple edition deadlines, and supplied web and wire service coverage.
